NAVIGATING THE GEN Z JOURNEY

Writer: crystalpreschool20crystalpreschool20

Mumma, you just won't get it—you're not Gen Z, ya know?

Or

Mumma, no offense, but this stuff is kinda beyond you... Gen Z vibes only…

If you’re a parent of a Gen Z kid, born roughly between 1995 and 2012, these lines are way too relatable and you’re likely part of Gen X.

But what do these labels mean, and do they actually shape how we parent?

There’s no doubt that big differences exist between the generations, and if you’re like me, you might feel constantly torn between being amazed and completely puzzled by the young person you’re raising.

Have you ever found yourself complaining that kids these days have it too easy? You know, talking to your child about how your childhood wasn’t as cool as theirs? I find myself doing that sometimes, sharing how different things were back then. We often want our children will share our beliefs and values, but is that truly fair?

Can we expect them to be like us when they’re growing up in a world that’s so different from the one we knew?

The answer is NO…this is not FAIR at all! Each generation encounters its own distinct challenges and viewpoints, making it essential to acknowledge and respect those differences.

Creating a strong connection with your Gen Z child requires understanding, open communication and allowing freedom with limitations.

The three E's are your magic keys to unlocking a stronger bond: Embrace, Encourage, Establish

1.    EMBRACE Technology

Get to know the digital world your child uses every day. Join them on social media or check out their favorite apps together. This shows you care about their interests and can lead to great conversations.

2.    ENCOURAGE Open Communication

Make a safe space for your child to share their thoughts and feelings openly. Regular check-ins can help you stay close and talk about any worries they have.

3.    ESTABLISH Boundaries BUT with Flexibility

Set clear guidelines but also allow for some flexibility. This way, they feel secure while still having the independence they seek.

Let’s savor the adventure of parenting instead of dwelling on the gaps. By enjoying this journey together, we can turn those differences into stepping stones for a stronger bond!
